I recently attended “Let’s OpenStack 2017” meetup hosted by the Indian OpenStack User Group. Along with a group of students from my college, I traveled to the Red Hat office in Pune to attend the event. The goal of the event was to revitalize the interest in OpenStack within the Pune region. The event featured three informative talks, which covered a variety of topics catering to both beginners and intermediate-level attendees.

Event began with a networking and discussion session about OpenStack among attendees, who were a mix of developers, system administrators and hobbyist. Unmesh Desale, a RDO contributor and OpenStack manager, introduced RDO and discussed its differences from upstream OpenStack. He also shared an interesting stats that OpenStack is the third most popular open-source project in 2017, behind only the Linux Kernel and Ansible.

Prasad Mukhedkar from Red Hat then gave a presentation on managing large OpenStack environments using ManageIQ, creating a self-service portal for provisioning instances, using reports for capacity planning, and utilizing ManageIQ’s smart state analysis and automation features for security compliance.

The session that particularly interested me was presented by Udayendu Kar from Avaya Software. He discussed how to create a catalog by writing a heat templates and deploying solutions through Murano. I requested Udayendu for a copy of his presentation after the session, and he was kind enough to share slides.

The last session was by Anandprakash, who discussed integrating devops tools, like Heat and Puppet, and how they can be used in devops processes. Although the session was very well-done, as a newcomer to these tools, I found it difficult to fully grasp the discussion.

Thanks to Chandan Kumar and Janki Chhatbar for organizing the meetup, as well as the Red Hat team for providing refreshments throughout the event. This meetup provided us valuable opportunity to learn from industry experts.
